Are you in love with the wheel, but having trouble pushing yourself beyond the basics? Are you looking to expand your technical abilities and your critical eye, to develop strong, resolved forms? This class will build on basic wheel throwing skills and introduce students to more complex shapes and composite forms through drawing exercises, demonstrations, and one on one instruction. We will explore how to take basic forms to another level, as well as how to design and construct more complex forms. Students can sign up for 4, 6, or 8 weeks. Classes will always start with demonstration, and at least half of the class time will be dedicated to open work time and one on one instruction. The first 4 sessions we will focus on one formal element each week: Session 1- How to break free of the cylinder– throwing complex shapes. Session 2- Handles for every form. Session 3- Lids and Galleries. Session 4- Spouts and Pouring Vessels. We will have at least 1 glaze firing at the end of the first 4 sessions. The second 4 sessions will be focused on developing a critical eye and applying the technical skills from the first 4 sessions to construct balanced, resolved forms. We will spend time critically reflecting on the pieces made during the first four sessions, and choosing at least one form to make again and improve upon. Formal demonstrations will continue in the second 4 sessions, but will be customized to student interest and requests. Students taking 6 or 8 sessions will have the opportunity to fire at least once more, and more frequently depending on the quantity of work made. Basic wheel throwing experience required.
