The Floyd Center for the Arts is proud to announce our 2022 Distinguished Artist as renowned artist of multiple media, Tom Nakashima.

​

Nakashima has been exhibiting his works of art publicly since the 1970s. Born in Seattle, he studied art as an undergraduate at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa. He later went on to achieve masters degrees in fine art from University of Notre Dame in Indiana. Nakashima's first solo exhibition was in 1971 at Merton Boyd Gallery in Columbus, Ohio. Since then, he has exhibited numerous times nationally, including at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. and the Bernice Steinbaum Gallery in New York City, NY. Tom Nakashima's work has been shown globally in Malaysia, Vietnam, Eastern Europe, Spain, Italy, Philippines, and more.

His work has earned him a multitude of awards throughout his career. Notably, The Joan Mitchell Foundation Award for Painters & Sculptors, The Mayor Award for Excellence (DC), and the Virginia Art Commissions Individual Arts Fellowship. An artist voted poll, the KOAN poll, rated him as DC's #1 printmaker and #2 painter.

Floyd Center for the Arts is honored to have Tom Nakashima as our Distinguished Artist for this year. Nakashima will have a solo exhibition in our Hayloft Gallery from June 11, 2022 - August 4, 2022. He will also have work present at the Center for the duration of 2022.
