Have you ever wanted to forge your own knife? This class will cover the basics of bladesmithing, such as material selection, rough forging the tang and blade, creating the tip and bevels, and heat treating. We'll be using a coal forge, hammer, and anvil .. and at the end of the day you'll take home your own hand forged blade, along with the skills necessary to begin your own knife making journey.

Clothing: • No open toe shoes. Leather boots are highly recommended. • No shorts • Depending on weather, layer up appropriately. Expect drastic temperature swings when working near the forge. • We will provide the following, but bring your own if you have them to ensure proper fit and comfort ○ Safety glasses ○ Ear protection ○ Full leather gloves Bring plenty of water, a lunch, and snacks.

Carl Cospel has lived in southwest VA for 24 years and has been a hobbyist bladesmith for 20 of those years. He works out of his shop in Christiansburg and specializes in small and medium sized Damascus knives. Carl has a background in engineering from Virginia Tech which he applies to blacksmithing by designing tools and equipment which he uses to create unique pieces in his shop. His passion for knives, their uses, and their history was sparked as a kid when his grandfather showed him a knife that he had made out of a file 50 years earlier. He continues his journey by honing his skills with new challenges, and providing opportunities for others to learn and begin the trade.
