Class Description

You will learn how to sculpt a toad in clay! Along the way, you will be able to wedge clay, shape it symmetrically, make slip, hollow and vent, paint with underglaze, and finally glaze. No Fear. You do not need to draw or paint. Anyone can do this with a step by step process. Your instructor will be there to keep you on track and ensure a wonderful result. There will be time to start a second toad of your choice. You will walk away with up to 2 finished toads, all designed, handsculpted, and painted by you! This is perfect for those interested in learning more about sculpture work and how to create forms. After this class, you will have the skills to work independently in the Open Ceramics Studio.

About the Instructor

My approach in sculpting starts from a realistic point of view, always working from models or photos. I strive for correct proportions and subtle changes of curve and plane to convey the personality of the subject. My preference is to use watercolor techniques when applying the underglaze that colors the piece. After an appreciation of the anatomy of a model and an understanding of what makes it unique, I then feel free to express my artistic vision.

Class Registration and Cancellation Policy

Advance Registration Required.

Registration: Class registrations are confirmed on a first-come, first-served basis.

Cancellation/Refund: The Floyd Center for the Arts will conduct classes for which an adequate number of students are registered. Class status is determined 1 week before the first date of the class, unless otherwise noted. Acceptance of payment does not guarantee that a class will run. If the Center must cancel a scheduled class, students who registered for such classes will be given the opportunity to transfer their payments to another course or receive a full refund of their tuition payment.

Student Withdrawals: Students withdrawing from a class before the cancellation period has ended, (one week prior to the start of class, unless otherwise noted) can receive a full refund or may transfer their payments to another class of their choice. Students who withdraw after the cancellation period has closed or after class has started, will not receive a refund.
