Tangled Up In Blue - Indigo +Shibori Fiber Arts Class - 5/8/21

with Alex Foster

FIB-050821

Class Description

Indigo + Shibori Fiber Arts Class: Explore the wonders of natural indigo dyeing with shibori techniques. Indigo is nature's blue.

Indigo Dyeing:

Indigo is nature's only natural blue pigment. In this class, students will learn how to create two separate indigo vats. The first is an organic "sugar vat" using concentrated powder extracted from leaves and reduced with fructose (fruit sugar). The second is a pre-reduced indigo vat using indigo pigment that has been chemically reduced and ready for dyeing fabric.

From there students will dive into the wonderful world of shibori, a Japanese method of resist dyeing traditionally used with indigo dye. Foster will explain how to fold, wrap, and tie fabric to create a vast range of patterns.

Materials List

1 yard of prewashed fabric (hot water), one shirt or scarf (all 100% cotton)

Minimum Age

18 and Older, or with Special Permission from the Center and Instructor
